Food in the Cloudy franchise can be categorized as sentient or non-sentient. Non-sentient food features prominently in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs while sentient food features prominently in the video game and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

Sardines[]

Sardines are the primary staple of Swallow Falls's economy. When people realized "sardines are super gross," the townspeople of Swallow Falls were stuck eating the sardines the rest of the world no longer wanted.

Meatballs[]

Meatballs feature heavily in the Cloudy franchise. In addition to being included in the title of the books and movies, the FLDSMDFR also cocooned itself in a giant meatball known as a Meat-a-Roid.

Cheeseburgers[]

Cheeseburgers are the first food created by the FLDSMDFR.

In the video game, burgers are used as a platforming item. They can help Flint and Steve reach higher platforms, and can be pushed along slick trails of butter to move them around the field.

While initially non-sentient, cheeseburgers were the foundation for the first Foodimal, the Cheespider.

Ice Cream[]

In Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Earl Devereaux requested ice cream as a treat for his son Cal's birthday. Flint treated Cal and the other schoolchildren to an ice cream snow day with 31 flavors.[1]

In the video game, the ice cream snow days became ice cream blizzards, raining frozen blockades of ice cream sandwiches and giant popsicles and burying Cal and his friends in the tasty tundra.

Jell-O[]

Jell-O (referred to as "jelly" in the videogame for trademark reasons) is Sam Sparks's favorite food. Flint made it rain Jell-O in the middle of the night and gathered it with the Outtasighter to make a Giant Jell-O Mold as a surprise for Sam.

In addition to the Jell-O Mold, in the video game, jelly is used as a bouncy springboard for platforming.

Steak[]

Flint orders steak to treat his dad to a fancy meal when Flint announced that he would be cutting the ribbon at the grand opening of Chewandswallow. Unfortunately, the steaks grew to enormous size, causing Tim Lockwood great concern. Flint and his dad argue about whether the FLDSMDFR should continue running.

In the video game, enormous steaks rain from the sky, causing damage if they hit Flint.

Hot Dogs[]

The enormous size of hot dogs that rained outside The Roofless was the catalyst for Flint to second-guess continued use of the FLDSMDFR. Mayor Shelbourne, while shoving an entire hot dog down his throat, convinced Flint that larger portion sizes was a good thing and to continue using the machine for the town's grand reopening.

In the video game, the hot dogs are much larger and rain down on Sardine Circle, heavily damaging Flint if they land on him.

In the Foodimal Jungle, a hot dog pops out of a "Let's All Go To The Lobby" sign.

Spaghetti[]

Spaghetti was on the menu for the grand opening of Chewandswallow, which resulted in a catastrophic Spaghetti Twister. In the video game, spaghetti ropes can be rappelled using the Forkamajigger.

Video Game Food[]

Some food features most prominently in the video game to help Flint and Steve climb and platform, to solve puzzles, or to defeat sentient food creatures.

Platforming food:

  • Chorizo
  • Pickles - later evolved into sentient beings
  • Butter Pieces - can also be melted using chili or the Hot Enougher to create a slick, oily surface
  • Watermelon
  • Coconut Shells - carried with the Forkamajigger to defend against pomegranates
  • Lettuce Leaves - carried with the Forkamajigger as a sail for bread boats. They later evolved into sentient beings.
  • Bubble Gum - can be inflated to carry Flint across wide chasms
  • Carrots - when sliced, can be punched with the Bigacious Pow to destroy enemy food. They later evolved into sentient beings.

Sprayable food:

  • Chili - when chili lands on the ground, it creates a burning hot puddle that scalds anyone attempting to cross. It can also be sprayed on certain food creatures to melt them.
  • Guacamole - can be sprayed on the ground to create a safe surface to walk on
  • Coffee - can be used to melt food creatures, blockades, and Hydronic Foodpods. Unlike chili, it does not stick to the ground.
  • Oil - creates a slick, oily surface to push objects along. Is also created when melting butter.

Blockade food:

  • Tortilla chips
  • Cookies
  • Burritos

Hydronic Foodpods:

  • Ice cream
  • Cheesy puffs
  • Ravioli
  • Sugar cubes
  • Strawberries

Sentient Food[]

When the FLDSMDFR begins to reach a breaking point from overuse, at first the food only appeared to grow in size. But upon reaching the Meat-a-Roid in the sky, Flint realizes the food has developed sentience, with the sole goal of protecting its creator.

In the video game, the sentient food is created earlier in the story and lands in Swallow Falls, terrorizing townspeople.

In Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, the sentient food further evolved into hybrids of food and animals known as Foodimals. While initially wary of the beasts, Flint learns that the Foodimals view him as a godlike figure known as "N-Woo" and simply want to live in peace on the island.

Trivia[]

  • To handle the physics of food hitting the ground, Sony used an open dynamics engine (ODE), a rigid-body dynamics solver. To get ODE to work efficiently, they had to use a program called Qhull to divide the food into convex shapes.[1]
