Fran Lockwood is the posthumous overarching protagonist in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. She was the wife of Tim Lockwood and the mother of Flint Lockwood.

Fran's absence creates a rooting interest for Flint: if his Mom loves him, then there must be something there to love, but if she's the only one who really gets him, and we take her away, then he is truly in an underdog scenario.

Personality[]

Fran was a loving, encouraging, supportive, friendly, and caring mother. She was the main reason why Flint became a scientist.

History[]

After Flint was humiliated due to the failure of his Spray-On Shoes, it was his mother who encouraged him to not give up on his dream of inventing and even made for him a white lab coat to show her support for her son, telling him she believed he would do "big things" someday.

from Clone Alone.

When Flint was a high school student, he had a photo of her inside his locker.

In Coat of Harms, he tries to tell Sam how his mom gave him the lab coat, having a copy of the same picture in his lab.

In both Brent Bro and Tim, Jim and Kim, Flint appears to be upset at the prospect of other women being attracted to Tim and taking his mom's place.

Nearly ten years[1] Prior to the creation of the FLDSMDFR, Fran has passed away from unknown circumstances and her death affected both Flint and Tim heavily. After her death, Tim proved to have difficulties raising his son due to not knowing how to properly show him the encouragement his mother used to show him. However, Flint would continue to be encouraged by the words she spoke to him in his youth throughout his inventing career.

In the end credits, her ghost is seen haunting Patrick Patrickson.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2[]

While she isn't seen, her husband Tim mentions her when he would die on Swallow Falls despite Flint warning him of the dangers there due to the Foodimals.

Trivia[]

  • Fran's death is an example of the Missing Mom trope.
  • Fran originally had a bigger role in earlier versions of the story.[2]
